Mosaic Pale Ale (Adnams)

Mosaic Pale Ale (Adnams)
Name: Mosaic Pale Ale
Label: "Jack Brand - Single Hop Beer"
Brewery: Adnams
ABV: 4.1%

Tasting notes: "Adnams Jack Brand beers pay homage to the generations of brewers that have come before us. With a firm nod to our history, we've added an exciting slurp of 'the modern' made with, you guessed it, mosaic hops. This pale blonde has bags of bold mango, peach, lemon & pine flavours with a dry hoppy finish. Big & fruity, it's a one-hop-wonder!"

Game: So we're finally home from E3 - whew! [you mean finally home from work like any other day? - Ed].  Stand-out reveals for us were Assassin's Creed Origins, Wolfenstein 2: The New Collossus, Evil Within 2 and of course the Xbox One X.  Slim pickings on the games front really. Here's hoping Spider-Man is only a timed PS4 exclusive rather than an exclusive exclusive!

E3 2017 rating: 6/10 - raised to 7/10 because we were actually there [no we weren't, so 6/10 - Ed]

80 Shilling (Belhaven)

80 Shilling (Belhaven)
Name: 80 Shilling
Label: "Rich Smooth Rounded"
Brewery: Belhaven
ABV: 3.9%

Tasting notes: "The 'Shilling' names typical of traditional Scots Ales refer to the historic wholesale price of a cask. 80 Shillings were top shelf stuff, so only the best ingredients are used in our classic 80/-, with 3 local malts and two hop varieties creating a rich copper coloured beer with malty, toffee and soft fruit character."

Game: We love Assassin's Creed figurines here at GamingAles. We has loads. Assassin's Creed Origins is now available to pre-order and the Ubisoft store has a fantastically titled version called Assassin's Creed Origins Dawn of The Creed Legendary Edition. It's a limited run of 999 units. Sadly it's £699.99. This is too much even for us *begins softly weeping*. The statue would be too tall to fit on a shelf in our display cabinet anyway [stop trying to make yourself feel better you scrub - Ed].

Here's what we could have owned if we weren't poor:

Rare Breed (Butcombe)

Rare Breed (Butcombe)
Name: Rare Breed
Label: "Truth in every taste"
Brewery: Butcombe Brewing Co
ABV: 4.2%

Tasting notes: "Rare Breed is the result of Adam Henson's dedication to sustainable farming and a passion for characterful artisinal beer. Using the finest Maris Otter malting barley and aromatic Fuggles hops, delicious, fruity Cascade and Amarillo hops and of course, purest Mendip spring water, Rare Breed is a distinctive, clean tasting pale ale with a smooth, citrus twist. A bold, stand-out beer that's one of a kind. "

Game: Hello, we're still here at E3 [no we're still not - Ed] and we're boiling hot in this LA heat [no we're not, we're cold because we're in England - Ed].  Big news - Xbox Scorpio is now called Xbox One X

Here's a fancy reveal trailer the tells you absolutely nuffin but looks pretty:

Cambridge IPA (Elgoods)

Cambridge IPA (Elgoods)
Name: Cambridge IPA
Label: "The company is sill owned and run by the 5th generation of the Elgood family"
Brewery: Elgood's
ABV: 4.7

Tasting notes: "A classic English Ale, a blend of Pale Ale, Crystal and Amber malts gives a smooth beer with a full malty flavour, with hints of dry biscuit. The hops are a blend of 4 English varieties and the bitterness is balanced by malt fruity notes. A long finish is complimented by the hop aroma which has a hint of spice."

Game: We're at E3 this week [no we're not you liar - Ed] and there's been some great stuff revealed so far.  The most anticipated reveal for GamingAles though is the new Assassin's Creed game, Assassin's Creed Origins. It's 4K, it looks amazing, there's a big snake.

Here's some trailer:

Dryneck (Wychwood)

Dryneck (Wychwood)
Name: Dryneck
Label: "A golden beer to wash away the drought"
Brewery: Wychwood Brewery
ABV: 4.0%

Tasting notes: "The perfect beer to quench the driest of throats. Mosaic hops release a combination of berry, fruity & citrus blasts resulting in a mouth-watering golden beer to wash away the drought."

Game: Join us over the coming week for all the best gaming related news coming out of E3. E3 stands for Excellent gamEs Enformation - this includes three E's so they shorten it to "E3" to sound cool.  And obviously "News" stands for Notable Events, Weather and Sport so we can sort a couple of them out now: Weather - Hot (LA in Americas init), Sport - no football or anything because it's about video games.

First Call (Badger)

First Call (Badger)
Name: First Call
Label: "Rich & Hoppy Beer - Single English Hop"
Brewery: Badger
ABV: 4.0%

Tasting notes: "A classic country ale, First Call is brewed with a single hop variety for purity and character. The dwarf hop First Gold grows in low hedgerows enabling a better quality harvest. A clean, fresh, distinctive beer with hints of orange and spice from the hop, perfect with traditional English roasts and pies."

Game: Remember Silkworm? Well Heavy Weapon on Xbox 360 is similar. It's a side-scrolling shooter, except you're in a tank instead of a jeep. It's got explosions, nukes and more enemies than you can shake a retro game at.  What more do you want. It's great, but it gets dead hard like in the 80's and 90's.

American IPA (Shipyard Brewing Co)

American IPA (Shipyard Brewing Co)
Name: American IPA
Label: "Portland Maine USA - Excellence in brewing"
Brewery: Shipyard Brewing Co
ABV: 5.0%

Tasting notes: "Combining the finest malted barley with a whole bunch of audacious American hops. This refreshing and gutsy American IPA is crisp, refreshing and explodes with a grapefruity citrus flavour."

Game: Another Xbox One Game with Gold this month - SpeedRunners. Your little character runs, jumps, swings and otherwise hurtles around circular levels. The aim being to leave your three competitors so far behind they go off-screen.  We imagine this would be great if you have some mates round for the local multiplayer mode (get some mates then - Ed)

Lakeland Gold (Hawkshead)

Lakeland Gold (Hawkshead)
Name: Lakeland Gold
Label: "Well hopped golden ale - Beer from the Lakes"
Brewery: Hawkshead Brewery
ABV: 4.4%

Tasting notes: "A refreshing, well hopped, fruity and bitter Golden Ale brewed with soft Lakeland water, yeast, English Maris Otter malted barley and a blend of full flower hops. The signature hop is American Cascade."

Game: Bioshock in space you say? Yes, Prey is kinda Bioshock in space.  For some reason I keep getting lost and/or coming up against over-powered baddies ALL the time. A few years ago I would have had this game for breakfast, nowadays though it's kicking my bony beer soaked ass (you sit in beer? - Ed).

Initial rating: 8 tonics out of 10
(1 out of 10 for making me feel old)

Dirty Tackle (Wychwood)

Dirty Tackle (Wychwood)
Name: Dirty Tackle
Label: "A solid looking amber beer - Ruck and maul & grab the ball"
Brewery: Wychwood Brewery
ABV: 4.0%

Tasting notes: "Avoid the scrum & make sure you score an early try with this winning full-bodied malty beer.  It's clean citrus aroma will tackle your taste buds & kick it's opponents into touch."

Game: There's something a bit wrong with Mass Effect Andromeda but it was still enjoyable for the most part. The main issue for me though was the priority missions seemed under-cooked and the experience was padded out with some of the most inane fetch quests ever committed to video game. Was too much development time spent on multiplayer rather than making sure the single player campaign was on point? If so then STOP. STOP STOP STOP. It's a Mass Effect game. A single player story driven RPG at it's core.  If there's demand for a multiplayer experience set in the Mass Effect universe then do that as well, but as a standalone game like Titanfall or Star Wars Battlefront. CD Projekt Red showed everyone how it's done with Witcher 3. Do it like that in future please.

Final definitely definitive rating: 6.5 / 10 (could do better, see me - Ed)

Golden Ale (Tesco)

Name: Golden Ale
Label: "Smooth & malty with a citrus hop aroma"
Brewery: Tesco
ABV: 4.0%

Tasting notes: "A well-balanced golden ale characterised with a refreshing citrus zest derived from a blend of hops."

Game: Apparently the new Need for Speed game due out later this year will have a "single player offline mode" and a "pause" facility.  This is absolutely groundbreaking stuff. So the single player "offline mode" means that you get to play the game without having to wait for a connection to a session and you don't have to listen to annoying gamers talking constantly, blowing into their mic and playing shit music. The new-fangled "pause" facility allows you to press a button which freezes the game at the very point you pressed the button. This should be useful as we will now be able to go for a poo or get more beer from the kitchen and when we get back to our seat the game will still be frozen in exactly the same position as when we left it.

India Pale Ale (Tesco)

India Pale Ale (Tesco)
Name: India Pale Ale
Label: "Water, Malted Barley & Hops"
Brewery: Tesco
ABV: 4.7%

Tasting notes: "Brewed with English barley malt, delivering a full-bodied bitterness and a distinctive hoppy aroma."

Game: Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams - Director's Cut is the newun on Games with Gold. I never played Great Giana Sisters on the Commodore 64 sadly. Although I did believe the lies that Nintendo sued the developer because it was a Mario rip-off.  Turns out Nintendo didn't sue, they just threatened them [careful, we don't want a lawsuit off Nintendo - Ed] Sorry, I meant Nintendo 'urged them to withdraw the game'.  Anyway, 21st century Giana Sisters is a great platformer, which looks absolutely stunning. And it's another one of those where you need to flip between different versions of the environment in order to progress. Nothing like Mario *pulls tongue out at Nintendo then quickly hides behind sofa*

It's a Me, 7/10

Cwrw Idris (Tomos Watkins)

Cwrw Idris (Tomos Watkins)
Name: Cwrw Idris
Label: "The Great Ales of Wales"
Brewery: Tomos Watkins
ABV: 5.2%

Tasting notes: "Despite the Kaiser's apparent personal grudge against Able-Seaman Idris Parry, having torpedoed and sunk him not once but twice, Idris' extraordinary inherent buoyancy enabled him to survive and go on to establish the Hurns Company in Wales. He maintained that his extravagant enjoyment of fine Welsh Ales after the Great War was simply to remove the lingering taste of sea water. 'Cwrw Idris' is intended to honour all members of our Armed Forces and we are sure that Idris would approve of his legacy, the Great Ales of Wales!" That's the info on the bottle, re: taste I get a full hoppy flavour with burnt toffee and chocolatey notes.

Game: Trying to play Monkey Island 2: Special Edition without using a guide. Pretty much impossible cos thick. Already used a guide to get Largo's spit off the wall. The answer always seems really obvious after you've cheated. Then you think,

"MeWhy did I cheat and use a guide?  I could have figured that out.

Other me: Oh no you couldn't, because you're thick. Plus you already played it in the 90's and you still can't remember what to do.

Me: Yeah but that was like 25 years ago.

Other me: Yeah but you're still a stupid turd".

and so on and so forth. Anyway, these remakes are great and it's a neat touch that you can switch from fancy new graphics to the original graphics. More of these please!

No. 6 - The Ginger Grizzly (Hatherwood)

The Ginger Grizzly (Hatherwood)
Name: The Ginger Grizzly
Label: "No, 6 - Alcoholic Ginger Beer"
Brewery: Hatherwood
ABV: 4.0%

Tasting notes: "This Ginger Grizzly Alcoholic Ginger Beer has been blended to give a light effervescence with natural ginger essences from around the world giving a refreshing and zingy lemon taste with a tongue-tingling warm spice finish. Pour over ice and garnish with fresh lemon for the prefect serve"

Game: There's nothing wrong with Mass Effect Andromeda... but it just got a tad boring and Assassin's Creed Rogue is now available on backwards compatibles. And it doesn't take much for GamingAles to have an excuse to replay Assassin's Creed games.

Revised Mass Effect Andromeda rating: 6.5 fetch quests out of 10

No. 5 - The Purple Panther (Hatherwood)

The Purple Panther (Hatherwood)
Name: The Purple Panther
Label: "No. 5 - Porter"
Brewery: Hatherwood
ABV: 5.0%

Tasting notes: "This Purple Panther is dark, silky and deeply delicious. This full-bodied and muscular blend has coffee roast bitterness at its core. Speciality sugar adds a distinctive toffee flavour to this sleek and smoky malted porter."

Game: SO we got our Mass Effect Andromeda review code (also known as Play First with EA Access) and we're well impressed so far. Not seen any problems with how characters' gobs move or any other bugs or glitches that everyone seems to be moaning on about. The opening few hours reminds us quite a bit of the first Mass Effect, but with way snazzier graphics. And a different story. And different characters. Full review coming not very soon, because the game is quite big.

Initial rating: 8 probiotics out of 10

No. 4 - The Ruby Rooster (Hatherwood)

The Ruby Rooster (Hatherwood)
Name: The Ruby Rooster
Label: "No. 4 - Ruby Ale"
Brewery: Hatherwood
ABV: 3.8%

Tasting notes: "This Ruby Rooster Ale is a bold and proud British classic, craft-brewed using Burton water and 100% British barley. A blend of Pale, Crystal & Chocolate malts deliver a delicious toffee malt flavour ensuring that this ale sits right at the top of the pecking order."

Game: Yet another free game reviewed! Banner Saga 2. Great game, we like the turn based combat, all the powers and horsey people and stuff. The story was incomprehensible gibberish though but we suspect playing the first Banner Saga would help with that. There are some big people, some less big-sized people, a big dude with an arrow stuck him who's kinda dead (?), the aforementioned horsey people, some black armoured baddies and a big snake thing that looks like an eel. Mix 'em all up and throw in some magic and BOOM - a story about travelling across the countryside.

No. 3 - The Amber Adder (Hatherwood)

The Amber Adder (Hatherwood)
Name: The Amber Adder
Label: "Amber Ale - No. 3"
Brewery: Hatherwood
ABV: 4.3%

Tasting notes: "This Amber Adder Ale is a dry-hopped, craft-brewed blend with bite! Lashings of big flavour American hops add sharpness and venom to dark coffee and toffee undertones."

Game: Free game with Xbox Live Gold: Layers of Fear.  Brilliant game, great atmosphere, creepy af. Actually jumped more times playing this than during Resident Evil 7. I did really bad at it too and got the ending that doesn't even class as a proper ending!

No. 2 - The Green Gecko (Hatherwood)

The Green Gecko (Hatherwood)
Name: The Green Gecko
Label: "IPA - No. 2"
Brewery: Hatherwood Craft Beer Company
ABV: 5.0%

Tasting notes: "The Green Gecko IPA is a tropical thunder-storm of big flavour new world hops with a peppery lemon zest finish. This unblinking classic is underpinned by a biscuit malt taste, allowing the bold exploration of frontier flavours."

Game: Xbox Live free Games with Gold time! Project Cars is great. It's got cars and race tracks and you drive really fast around the track to get back to the start and if you do this before everyone else then you are the winner. Looks nice, strange music, we like the format better than Forza Horizon 3.

No. 1 - The Golden Goose (Hatherwood)

The Golden Goose (Hatherwood)
Name: The Golden Goose
Label: "Golden Ale - No. 1"
Brewery: Hatherwood
ABV: 3.8%

Tasting notes: "This Golden Goose Ale has been traditionally craft-brewed using Burton water and 100% British barley. Pale and Crystal malts combined with Fuggle and Styrian Golding hops deliver a refreshing and full-bodied flavour showing that this ale is not afraid to stick its neck out!"

Game: This week we've been giving the For Honor Beta a whirl. Firstly, we spotted a typo, they spelt "Honour" wrong... but as it's Ubisoft we'll let them off. Second thing that strikes us about For Honor [sic] is that it feels more like a fighter than a third-person hack 'n slash. That's about it for now folks... [I think we need to write more - Ed]. Erm.. ok, the graphics are great? The full game will have a single player mode but the focus is more on multiplayer? [Enough! - Ed]

Amber Stone (Marstons)

Amber Stone (Marstons)
Name: Amber Stone
Label: "Extraordinary Character - Rich and malty nose with a hint of apple fruit"
Brewery: Harper's Brewing Co. - Brewed by Marston's Brewery [wtf?]
ABV: 4.4%

Tasting notes: "Notice the smooth caramel flavours from crystal malts with a lightly dry and nutty texture to finish. Fresh, soft earthy and hedgerow aroma from old world hops. All that sweetness is balanced out by a rounded but robust bitterness"

Game: This week we've mostly been scared w(sh)itless on Resident Evil 7 Biohazard. It's great. It's given us some great ideas for the office refurbishment plan too. Basically we're going to have random lumps of statue that when you hold them up at a certain angle, the shadow they cast onto the wall will complete a picture that will then cause a secret door to open in the wall enabling us to get to another area of the office where a much needed item is kept, probably the stapler or the hole puncher thingy.

Rating: 7 office refurbs out of 10.

Fire in the Hole (Fallen Angel)

Fire in the Hole (Fallen Angel)
Name: Fire in the Hole
Label: "Chili Beer"
Brewery: Fallen Angel Brewery
ABV: 4.9%

Tasting notes: "A golden ale flavoured with fresh green chilli. The beer has the aromatic taste of the fresh chilli with moderate heat."  Amazing spicy beer! It also has spicy nuts!

Game: Back on Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition as we wait impatiently for Resident Evil 7. In a recent post we stated that Sleeping Dogs was set in Shanghai. This is completely inaccurate and we apologise for any offence this may have caused. Sleeping Dogs is set in Hong Kong, a whole 762 miles away from Shanghai. The idiot buffoon of a writer that wrote the original post has been suspended without pay and summarily executed. When he returns we're sending him on a geography training boot-camp to learn about maps and reading and stuff.

Sleeping Dogs rating: still 8 out of 10.

North Bridge Brown Ale (Harpers)

North Bridge Brown Ale (Harpers)
Name: North Bridge Brown Ale
Label: "A lightly hopped ale, with a sweet chocolate caramel flavour"
Brewery: Harper's Brewing Co
ABV: 4.7%

Tasting notes: "Brown ales are lightly hopped, so the sweet chocolate and caramel flavours of the lightly roasted malts should be front and central on this beer. A rich dark chestnut colour with a creamy richness achieved by brewing with oats."

Game: GamingAles loves figurines and game related collector's editions. Ubisoft do the best ones though. It's official. The detail of the Assassin's Creed range for example is amazing compared to the Batman Arkham Knight collector's edition. This appeared in CEX and just looks like a lump of cheap black plastic roughly resembling the Gotham skyline and Batman. And now we notice the Resident Evil 7 collector's edition doesn't even include the game. What the actual...

Ubisoft rating: 10 levels of detail out of 10.
